To be seen
I see you, do you see me? Every human wants to be seen. We want to be heard, to feel worthy and noticed. Have you ever told someone, "I see you?" Often times we can go through life not fully present with where we are and what we are doing. How many times have you been at the grocery store checking out, and you're on your phone. Completely not making eye contact or engaging in conversation with the cashier. Yes, this is you? Don't worry we have all probably been that person at some point in our lives.
Often times I see people on the streets with signs for money. I have no money to give but I do my best to acknowledge them. I will roll my window down or stop while walking and simply say, "Hi, I see you" and ask what their name is. Tell them some words of affirmation and send my love to them. How many times a day I wonder that they go unnoticed. Those three words could change their whole day around. I've never had a bad experience yet with acknowledging someone in that way. Imagine going through life feeling invisible every day.
I'm not just talking about people on the streets, I'm talking about the people you encounter on your day today. Telling those three words to the person at your favorite coffee shop who makes you coffee every morning. A simple small interaction fully engaged and present could change someone's life. We don't know what people struggle with on a daily.
That cashier who makes you coffee every morning, she could be in an abusive relationship and feel unworthy and noticed every day. That homeless person you see on the streets every day could be there because of medical bills or a tragic event. Every human deserves to be seen and heard.
Your voice matters and your voice could do more than you can imagine. Be kind, be engaged be present and look people in the eyes.
I see you, do you see me?
